A little bit of local
Apr 05 2010

Especially at this time of year many of my clients say, "I can't wait for the farmers markets to open, so I can start eating all of the fresh vegetables, fruits".  Many of us have come to enjoy the benefits of shopping at the local farm markets, saving money and eating ultra fresh foods.  You just can't compare the flavor, texture and nutritional benefits of fresh strawberries in late June harvested in the northeast at their peak to those that have been shipped from the west coast for Spring time eating.  My daughter aptly stated she can taste the sunshine in those that she picks herself!

If eating locally and seasonally is not something that is fully integrated into your daily life how about trying , a little bit of local all year round!  This past weekend I went to Rogowski Family farm in Pine Island NY to plan my menu for the holiday weekend meal.  I purchased a Winter CSA share at the farm this year and have been enjoying fresh greens, baby chard, spinach, cilantro,, lettuces and root crops all winter long to supplement  our meals.  This weekend I purchased a beautiful blend of lettuces, baby chard, fresh thyme, fingerling potatoes, and some organic asparagus (not from the farm) and local eggs.  Earlier this past week I bought a 1/2 turkey from Old Ford Farm in New Paltz, NY. Old Ford Farm offers CSA's,pastured eggs and  meat s, grass fed raw milk and vegetables.

My little bit of local holiday meal consisted of: Oven roasted herb rubbed Turkey, Fingerling potato pancakes with applesauce- (from local wintered over apples), layered spring salad greens with lemon/chive dressing and roasted asparagus with orange/cilantro vinaigrette topped with a crumbling of local goats cheese.   With a shift in your shopping routine you can easily start to incorporate a little more local into every meal!
